Summary
And so with that, we’re all wrapped up with the nitty gritty details. Hopefully it has been laid out and organized in a way that it’s easy to understand and find what you might be looking for as I know I was not necessarily brief at times. Given all of the detail I don’t have much else to say, other than some summary statistics if you will, so that it’s easy to understand how long it took to complete everything (in terms of hours spent by 2 people), and (the most pressing question of them all) how much it cost. I’ve included all of that in the table below, along with some thoughts that follow.
As you can see the overall build took about five and half weeks (assuming 2 people working 40 hours a week), and cost me just under $6,500. Based on what I’ve seen in the community I would say this build is pretty middle of the road in terms of complexity. There are certainly major things you could do to reduce time and cost such as a simpler or nonexistent electrical setup, or a reduction in overall size of the van, thus reducing overhead. On the other hand you could certainly do a lot more customization than I did and find yourself quickly increasing cost, complexity, and time spent by adding more modularity, a more advanced plumbing system (including a shower or toilet), or a propane setup. Hopefully the metrics above can help you more accurately budget how much work you’ll need to do, and how much time you’ll need to spend.
That about wraps up all I have to say in terms of my van build. If I can leave the reader with anything, it’s to get out there, buy the van, and see where it takes you. You can plan and plan and plan for years, but until you actually pull the trigger and have the van in your driveway, a plan is just a well organized dream. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and go for it!
